Making YouTube videos with Veo 3.1: workflow and cost

Veo 3.1 works best on YouTube as a source of b-roll, intros and short illustrated or narrated segments, in 16:9, joined in your editor. A minute of silent b-roll is about eight 8-second clips: 16 credits on Lite at 720p (about $3.41–$4.00) or 48 on Fast at 1080p.

Key takeaways

  • Treat it as a b-roll and intro source, not a whole-video generator: clips are 8 seconds at most.
  • For footage under your own voiceover, leave sound off; it costs less.
  • For a narrated series, keep one style block and repeat it word for word in every prompt.
  • Each clip is generated on its own. Reuse the last frame of one clip as the first frame of the next for continuity.

Workflow: script to timeline

  1. Mark the b-roll moments in your script

Go through the script and mark each line that needs a visual. One marked line is one 8-second clip; count them to get your credit budget before you generate anything.
  2. Write one style block for the whole video

Look, lighting, colour, era and lens, in one paragraph you paste at the start of every prompt. Then add the scene: one subject, one action, one camera move, and “no text, no subtitles” for clean b-roll.
  3. Generate each clip

In the generator: Model: Veo 3.1 Fast · Resolution: 1080p · Aspect Ratio: 16:9 · Duration: 8s · With Audio: off. That is 6 credits a clip, shown next to Generate Video before you start.
  4. Chain clips that must flow

For a continuous scene, export the last frame of one clip and upload it as the First Frame Image on the Image-to-Video tab for the next.
  5. Match the timeline

Every gallery file we sampled was 24 fps, whatever the prompt asked for. Set your timeline to match, or expect your editor to convert the frame rate.

Real YouTube-style clips from our gallery

The first three come from a five-clip documentary series published to the gallery on the same day and written as one sequence. It is narrated in Turkish, each prompt repeats the same style and audio blocks, and all three files have a sound track. The rest are silent 16:9 b-roll.

  • Documentary narration in Turkish

    Veo 3.1 Fast · 16:9 · 1080p · 8 s · audio on · 10 credits (about $2.13–$2.50)

It names the voice (calm male documentary narrator), the language and pronunciation, the room sound (archive room tone, paper rustling, a ticking clock) and says “no music”. The narration is one sentence.

  • Documentary series: a hand points at the missing dates

    Veo 3.1 Fast · 16:9 · 1080p · 8 s · audio on · 10 credits (about $2.13–$2.50)

It opens with a continuity block (“Preserve the same … from the previous scene”) listing everything that must stay the same. Each clip in the series repeats the style and audio blocks word for word and changes only the action and the narration line.

  • Documentary series: the town square

    Veo 3.1 Fast · 16:9 · 1080p · 8 s · audio on · 10 credits (about $2.13–$2.50)

It uses the same continuity and audio blocks as the rest of the series, with a new location and new actions. Writing a series this way is what keeps 8-second clips looking like one film once you cut them together.

  • Finance b-roll: closing a notebook at sunset

    Veo 3.1 Lite · 16:9 · 720p · 8 s · audio off · 2 credits (about $0.43–$0.50)

This is documentary-style b-roll that ends with “no text, no logos” and puts the emotion in behaviour (a confident smile, a look out of the window) rather than in on-screen numbers.

  • Finance b-roll: comparing grocery prices

    Veo 3.1 Lite · 16:9 · 720p · 8 s · audio off · 2 credits (about $0.43–$0.50)

It shows an abstract idea (rising living costs) through an everyday action, “without showing any text or numbers”. Lite at 720p with audio off is the cheapest setting we offer, which suits b-roll you will cover with a voiceover anyway.

  • B-roll: an employee panics at a laptop

    Veo 3.1 Fast · 16:9 · 1080p · 8 s · audio off · 6 credits (about $1.28–$1.50)

One clear reaction in one sentence. Generic office b-roll like this is where a generated clip can stand in for a stock-footage search.

  • B-roll: a phone on a boardroom table, “leaking” data

    Veo 3.1 Fast · 16:9 · 1080p · 8 s · audio off · 6 credits (about $1.28–$1.50)

A macro shot with one abstract effect makes useful cover footage for a voiceover about privacy or security.

  • B-roll: takeoff seen from a window seat

    Veo 3.1 Fast · 16:9 · 1080p · 8 s · audio off · 6 credits (about $1.28–$1.50)

It fixes the camera and describes the frame precisely (window bottom-right, wing from upper-left), then gives one continuous action. That is how to get usable travel b-roll without a stock-footage search.

The narration prompts are explained line by line on our dialogue and sound prompts page.

Limits for YouTube videos

The limits every workflow shares (8-second clips, 16:9 and 9:16 only, unreliable generated text, drift between clips, optional sound, rights) are listed once on the use cases page. These are the ones specific to this kind of video:

  • Long videos need a lot of clips. A 10-minute video is about 75 clips of 8 seconds. Generate the parts that need visuals you can’t film, not the whole runtime.
  • Narration varies clip to clip. A voice generated in each clip may not sound identical across a series. For one consistent narrator, record the voiceover and generate the b-roll silent.
  • Platform rules. Check YouTube’s current rules on disclosing realistic AI-generated or altered content before you publish.

Frequently asked questions

Can Veo 3.1 make a whole YouTube video?

Not in one piece. Each clip is at most 8 seconds, so a 10-minute video would be about 75 clips. In practice creators use generated clips for b-roll, intros and illustrated segments, and record or edit the rest.

What does a minute of AI b-roll cost?

A minute is about eight 8-second clips. Silent b-roll costs 16 credits on Lite at 720p or 48 on Fast at 1080p, before retakes.

How do I keep scenes consistent across clips?

Each generation starts fresh and does not see your earlier clips. Repeat the same style and character description word for word in every prompt, or grab the last frame of one clip and upload it as the First Frame Image for the next.

Should I use 16:9 or 9:16?

We generate 16:9 (widescreen) and 9:16 (vertical). Pick the shape your video uses: widescreen for a standard upload, vertical for Shorts. The shape is set in the Aspect Ratio control, not in the prompt.

How we checked: costs computed from our current price list; gallery prompts read in full and each file measured with ffprobe on November 9, 2026; UI labels match the generator as of November 8, 2026. Other workflows are on the use cases page.
